With February getting underway, the traditional holiday season has ended for just about everyone. Yet, for many football fans, the greatest holiday of the year is quickly approaching and it’s called Super Bowl.

Each year, the two best teams in the NFL face off against each other for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. It’s what every team longs for, and for this particular battle, the stakes couldn’t be higher. This, of course, is because of the matchup between two of the biggest names in football today and possibly of all time.

For the youngster quarterback Patrick Mahomes, this could be the game to prove that he’s worth the supersized contract he received over the last offseason. Yet, for veteran star Tom Brady, the Super Bowl LV title could be the final piece needed to prove that he is the greatest to ever play the game.

In Mahomes’ case, it’s all about proving his worth to the team. After just winning the Super Bowl last year, he was able to score a massive contract that in total is worth over $503 million. For Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff, what better way is there to prove critics wrong than to just go out and win the whole thing again? At the same time, Mahomes would be the third quarterback in the history of the NFL to lead the league in passing yards per game and win the Super Bowl in the same year if he comes away with the victory on Sunday according to cbssports.com.

However, Tom Brady is out for personal gain this time. After being traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over the offseason, he is more than determined to show that he didn’t need the coaching staff or the teammates on the Patriots to succeed. He already has the most Super Bowl rings ever with six, and a win here would only add on to the pile of the veteran’s glamorous collection.

No matter who you root for, there’s a trophy-worthy quarterback playing for both teams, but this doesn’t mean that you have to pick a side.

“All year I have been taking fantasy football more seriously than usual just because the league has been so much fun to follow this season. I never would’ve thought that Tom Brady could’ve made it this far, and it’s crazy to think that Patrick Mahomes is in the Super Bowl again. I can’t wait to see some of the best quarterbacks of all time battle it out against each other,” junior Ryan McMullin said.

However, one of the best things about the Super Bowl is that you can watch it without knowing either of the teams. There are aspects of the Super Bowl that please all kinds of audiences.

“When the players aren’t on the field, I love to watch the halftime show. The best one ever in my opinion was when Travis Scott performed a couple years ago because he is one of, if not my favorite artist right now,” McMullin said.

For those who look forward to the halftime show, this year’s guest performer will be The Weeknd. In spite of this exciting news, the most popular part of the game might have nothing to do with either of the things previously mentioned.

“Most of my family enjoys watching the commercials more than anything. We usually sit down with tortilla chips and salsa, and tune in to all of the funny commercials that are aired. The most memorable one for me would definitely have to be the puppy monkey baby commercial from Mountain Dew that was shown a few years back,” junior Elise Newman said.

Regardless of why you’re watching, sometimes it’s nice to just sit down with the people you care about and relax despite what is happening on the screen.

“I especially enjoy hanging out with my family members and our next door neighbors, who we are close friends with. Watching the Super Bowl with them is a tradition we’ve carried on for many years now, and it’s always something that I look forward to, even if I’m not paying much attention to the final score,” junior Paige Hunt said.

Surely Super Bowl LV will be fun no matter what reason you’re watching. As long as everyone takes extra precautions due to COVID-19, this will definitely be a memorable Super Bowl with commercials, performances, and an outcome that nobody will be forgetting any time soon.
