The varsity girls basketball team won the consolation championship at the Troy Pepsi Invitational.

St. Dominic’s varsity girls basketball team tipped off their season with a league record of 2-2. The Crusaders have gone through some ups and downs so far in their season but with a 6-4 record on the season, they are looking forward to the second half.

The Crusaders had a bumpy start to their season in their home opener against the highly ranked Westminster Wildcats. Dominic fell to Westminster, but quickly rebounded a week later to win the consolation championship at the Troy Pepsi Invitational.

St. Dominic then stole their next two league games against St. Francis Borgia and Cor Jesu. In the following matchup, Troy-Buchanan defeated Dominic by a small margin of 69-61. With two tournaments and four league games under their belt, the girls varsity team is currently 6-4.

“I believe the girls’ season is off to a strong start. After 10 games, our record stands at 6-4 with all four losses coming from ranked schools. We continue to get better,” the head coach for the varsity girls basketball team, DJ Blaine, said.

The Crusaders’ winning record has showcased their upperclassmen leadership. Their thirteen player roster is packed with years of experience. Five of the eight juniors on the team have competed on varsity since freshman year, and as the only two seniors on the team, Kennedy Mueller and Jessie Blaine lead the charge on and off the court.

On top of the team’s proactive upperclassmen performance, the success of the Lady Crusaders can not be discussed without mentioning their new head coach. Coach Blaine jumped at the opportunity for a new challenge and has worked to restructure the girls basketball program since day one.

Coach Blaine introduced an entirely new playbook. She also encourages bonding across all three levels of the program. She drives the team to give 110% every moment they are on the court, which will help them during the postseason grind.

“I am very excited for a postseason run. We are working every day to improve. I can’t wait to see how far we will go!” said Coach Blaine.

With a new coach and outstanding upperclassman leadership, the team has high hopes for the second half of the season. Make sure you look at the bulletin to see when our varsity basketball ladies are playing so you can support their successful season!
