A Country Hanging in the Balance

The winner of the 2020 election is still undecided as votes continue to be counted.

With the 2020 election underway, the race to the presidency is still undecided as votes are still being counted and the country is awaiting the announcement. Both candidates are neck and neck, and just a few states could tip the scale and give Joe Biden or President Donald Trump the victory.

As of November 4, Biden is narrowly beating President Trump. However, no winner has been declared yet. Votes still need to be counted in Michigan, Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Alaska.

For President Trump to win, he needs to secure the electoral votes from Pennsylvania and at least three other states and he must make a clean sweep of all five remaining states to get to 270. Biden’s path to victory would include him winning the states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada.

This tension throughout the country could go on for a while, as mail-in votes continue to be counted. Despite which party wins, the country will still be in an undecided state as lawsuits may be filed in some states arguing the validity of the votes cast this year.

“Lawyers representing Trump’s Republican presidential campaign may file cases in Pennsylvania and other states in hopes of overseeing ballot-counting procedures,” Danielle Lang, co-director of voting rights and redistricting for the Campaign Legal Center, said.

These lawyers may also mount court challenges aimed at disqualifying votes that would otherwise go to Biden. A key state to pay attention to is Michigan, because ballots there may be halted due to a lawsuit from President Trump’s campaign.

“As votes in Michigan continue to be counted, the presidential race in the state remains extremely tight as we always knew it would be. We have filed suit today in the Michigan Court of Claims to halt counting until meaningful access has been granted. We also demand to review those ballots which were opened and counted while we did not have meaningful access. President Trump is committed to ensuring that all legal votes are counted in Michigan and everywhere else” campaign manager Bill Stepien said.

Regardless of the lawsuits and the fact that Biden is narrowly beating President Trump, America will continue to remain undecided as to who will become president in one of the most controversial elections in history.
