Back to School Night—but Make It Virtual

St. Dominic parent participated in virtual back to school night by watching a teachers video at home

The annual St. Dominic Back to School Night was held last Thursday. Parents were able to learn all about their students’ classes; however, due to COVID-19, Back to School night looked a little different this year.

Back to School night was held virtually this year, instead of in-person like years past. Instead of parents walking through their students’ schedule at school, teachers posted videos on My School App explaining what their class is all about.

“I told the parents about me and the class and how they would be assessed on their knowledge and how they could reach all of the resources on Blackbaud and find their assignments easily,” Señora Phillips said.

Parents were able to virtually meet their children’s teachers, and learn more about the class content, expectations and grading procedures. Step-by-step instructions were emailed to parents on Thursday, August 27 explaining how to access each individual teacher’s video on the My School App website.

“With COVID, the amount of parents that attend this event makes it impossible for it to happen on campus. We developed this virtual night so they can see and hear from each of their child’s teachers,” school principal, Mrs. Stewart, said.

The videos that the teachers posted were two to three minutes long, and covered everything parents needed to know about the course. Despite the circumstances, the night went smoothly for parents and teachers all around.

“I really enjoyed hearing from the teachers about each of my daughter’s classes, and the format was a good alternative to being able to be there in person,” parent, Steve Jones said.

Virtual Back to School Night was a huge success, and a great way for parents to participate in the event while staying safe in their homes. We hope to continue to keep our families healthy and safe, while still getting a great education!
