Spring Sports Preview
Right as the calendar flipped to March, spring sports turned a new page, ready for the 2020 season. With so much talent to showcase, tryouts this week have everyone ready for the season to get into full swing.
Girl’s Lacrosse
The lacrosse girls are picking up their sticks and taking the field. They have been practicing hard in the off-season and are ready for whatever comes their way. With head coach and history teacher Shannon Newton on maternity leave, junior varsity lacrosse and field hockey coach Madeline Feldman is taking over. With a bunch of new faces on the team and in charge, the girls are eagerly anticipating what the season holds.
“I’m super excited for lacrosse this year because playing with this group of girls is so much fun,” senior Cati Welby said.
Baseball
The baseball boys return this year following an impressive season, after capturing the district title in 2019 for the first time in ten years. The returning and upcoming talent is sure to continue the 2019 team’s legacy.
“I’m really excited for baseball this year. Some good underclassmen are going to add a lot to the team,” senior Kyle Fowler said.
Boy’s Tennis
The boy’s tennis team is gearing up for an exciting season. They are hungry and ready to create their own unique story that will go down in St. Dominic history. Senior Tim Blechle is leading the charge, and he is excited for all the team has to offer.
“I am looking forward to my final season at St. Dominic. We have so much new talent coming up on varsity, and I’m looking forward to how we can work as a team this season,” Blechle said.
Boy’s and Girl’s Track and Field
Track and field is excited to return and run away with this season. This year they’re focusing on becoming better teammates by pushing each other to their limits. While this sport is super fun and allows some time to relax at meets, there’s always a competitive spirit with it.
“If you ain’t first… you’re last,” senior Tyler Juergensmeyer said.
Boy’s Golf
Swinging their way into the season, the boys look to take this year up a notch. They had a good 2019 season and have been building upon their success during the off-season.
“We have been working on getting better and are thinking of the long run,” sophomore Jackson Bell said.
Boy’s Volleyball
Boy’s volleyball is full of opportunity. With nine graduating seniors last year, the team is an exciting question mark full of potential. Junior Brody Leuktenhaus played on the varsity team last year and cannot wait to see what the season holds.
“This year I’m really looking forward to the new team and how we’re going to do. We lost a lot of seniors last year, but I think we have some great players coming up, and it’s going be a ton of fun building new team chemistry and playing together,” Leuktenhaus said.
Girl’s Soccer
The reigning Missouri Class 3 State Champions take the pitch this week and are looking better than ever. The United Soccer Coaches pre-season poll has them ranked second in the nation, bumping them up from fifth, where they finished last season. The girls have lots of returners coupled with new talent and cannot wait to journey towards a two-peat.
“The journey is always tough, and we obviously want to focus on what is immediately ahead of us. That being said, we are already thinking in the back of our minds about how amazing winning state twice in a row would be. As always, we’ll have a lot of teams gunning for us, but I know we can rise to the challenge together,” senior Anna Stiffler said.
Make sure to support all the spring athletes by attending their games and congratulating them on their wins. Good luck to all playing this season!
