Marching For The Right To Life

Thousands of people gather to walk for the pro-life march.

This past weekend, 100,000 people ventured hours to Washington D.C. for one cause: to end abortion.

47 years ago the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision legalized abortion. Ever since then, about 57 million unborn babies have fallen victim to abortion, and more die every day. Each year, men and women of all ages travel for hours to the capital in order to protest for the youngest of us who cannot stand up for themselves.

This year broke the record for the most attendants at the March for Life with an estimated amount of 100,000 people. It was also historic because President Donald Trump spoke before the march began, becoming the first president to be present and speak at the pro-life march. After the speech, the enormous crowd walked down Constitution Avenue to support their beliefs. Toddlers, teenagers and elders all marched together with oversized signs, matching pro-life attire and determined spirits.

After the two mile walk, the gigantic herd dispersed. Later that evening, high school and middle school students went to programming events held by Generation Life. Multiple speakers shared stories about experiences with abortion and finding Christ in the midst of all struggles. The talks were very moving and well-thought-out.

The next day, visitors had all of Saturday to eat, rest or tour any sites they desired to explore. St. Dominic students and staff went to many different attractions. They visited many landmarks such as the Washington Monument, WWII Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and the White House. Less basic but just as enjoyable places were the Holocaust Museum and Georgetown.

Before the numerous buses carried all the students home, everyone gathered at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday night. Beautiful paintings covered the ceiling and walls as Archbishop Carlson led the students in Mass.

The trip to Washington D.C. was long but worth it: Thousands upon thousands of people were able to stand up for something they believe in. If you want to go, be sure to take your opportunity and go on the trip next year with St. Dominic or any nearby parish.
