Same Trends, Different Decade

1999 and 2019 are extremely different in many ways, but the past is known to repeat itself. From
bleached hair to neon jackets, ‘90s trends have been slowly reintroducing themselves throughout
this decade.

The new aesthetic seems to be the “retro” fashion. After the ‘90s and the early 2000s, we thought
it was a fashion crisis to wear denim on denim, but now we see it every day. Today, jean jackets
and mom jeans go hand in hand. Kylie Jenner has been known to make mom jeans a thing again,
and we aren’t unimpressed, as it takes a lot to pull off that look.

Neon jackets, biker shorts and printed pants have also been making an appearance in clothing
stores all over the place. Most fashion shows this year have had some type of ‘90s fashion
thrown in, creating a want for the decade from stores.

Scrunchies, plaid skirts and pants, flared pants, sea shell necklaces and boho headbands are some
of the most popular things with teen girls this year, and they all stem from 20 years ago. Girls
who wear these trends have been categorized as “VSCO” girls because that’s the new aesthetic
on the VSCO social media and photo app.

“I don’t even know why flared pants started to die away! They are for sure one of my favorite
clothing pieces for all seasons,” junior Katie Donnelly said.

Although some people think most of these trends should have stayed in the ‘90s, it’s fun to dress
different and bring back the past every once in a while. It seems impossible to tell what will
make a comeback 20 years from now, but let’s hope we don't look back and regret what we wore
this decade.
