Boys Basketball ended tipoff tournament 2-1, turn to season play

The boys’ and girls’ basketball teams made a slam dunk as they played in their first
tournaments of the season this past weekend. The boys played in the MICDS Tip-Off
Tournament, while the girls’ team played in the 32nd Troy Invitational.

The boys’ team consists of one senior, seven juniors, and four sophomores. Junior Brendan
Deters scored 15 and junior Anthony Lewis scored 12 in the season opener against a tough
Westminster team in the first round. Although they lost the first game, they bounced back against
Saint Charles West, taking home a 61-48 victory. Sophomore Ryan Schwendeman was the
leading points scorer with 23, as the team held Saint Charles West to just seven points in the
third quarter.

This led to their playing in the consolation final against Riverview Garden, in which they took
home another victory, with Brendan Deters scoring 24 in that contest. They return to regular
season play sporting a 2-1 record as they play two games this week: Wednesday at Winfield, and
Thursday at University City.

Flipping to the other side, the girls have started their season full of young talent, as they carry six
sophomores and one junior. Unfortunately, they dropped their first four games this season
against tough opponents, but turned that around on December 9 as they took home a 60-27
victory against Duchesne.

Sophomores Ellie Cook and Alex Zoellner led the charge for the game, putting up 15 and 13
points respectively. Jessica Larson dished out eight assists and posted a very impressive seven
steal performance. They play their final game of 2019 on Thursday as they take on Cardinal
Ritter. It’s a home game, so be sure to come out to support the team.

The basketball season is sure to be a good one, as both teams have high potential and show more
and more promise every game. Make sure you come out to support both teams as they keep their
sights set on a good season before districts.
