End of the Decade: Music Edition

December 9, 2019

The decade is coming to an end in less than a month, and so much memorable music has been released and played throughout the years. These artists have given us iconic lyrics and memories that will leave people singing along for years to come.

2010

To start the decade off, the most popular song was “Tik Tok” by Kesha. Even though it will soon be ten years old, the head-banger is still a relevant hit that teens play today.

“I love that song because even though it’s old, I can still remember every word,” freshman Olivia Arrowood said.

2011

Most can recall “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele. The revenge song calls out an unfaithful boyfriend and empowers all women, preaching that women don’t need to run back to an unhealthy relationship. The song has sold over 8.7 million copies in the United States.

2012

“Somebody that I used to Know” by Gotye is another breakup song about not getting over an ex. It has sold more than 13 million copies worldwide.

“It is one of my favorite songs because sad songs have that vibe to them, but this song in particular also is catchy and has a fun beat,” senior Sam Schilling said.

2013

“Thrift Shop” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz talks about saving money while still looking put together. They wrote this song to contrast how other rappers and songwriters brag about the amount of money they spend and how expensive materials can be.

2014

“Happy” by Pharrell Williams sounds just like the title. “Because I’m happy, clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth.” The entire song talks about being happy for your life, and the tune definitely puts you in a good mood.

2015

A streak of uplifting and fast-paced songs continues with “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronsono. This song features Bruno Mars and has sold at least 300,000 copies for eight weeks straight.

2016

Justin Bieber crushed 2016, securing the top two places on the charts with “Love Yourself” and “Sorry.” Both of these songs are slow-paced and talk about his relationship problems. “Love Yourself” has sold over 1.6 million copies in the United States and spent 23 consecutive weeks on the top ten list.

2017

“Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran is a happy tune and has a more uplifting message than some of the previous top hits. Instead of talking about heartbreak, Sheeran sings about his love for someone. However, not everybody agrees.

“My favorite album from 2017 is The Click because it’s fun and has a good message,” junior Brody Leuktenhaus said.

2018

“God’s Plan” by Drake is a great way to end the decade. His music video consists of him giving money and talking to charities and people in need everywhere. Drake’s kindness was certainly seen by fans, as the song has been streamed over 1.5 billion times.

2019

Even though 2019 is almost over, the top hit of the year has not been announced yet. I think the best song will be “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish because of how quickly the song blew up. It broke records by being number two on charts for nine weeks before climbing to number one.

“‘Truth Hurts’ by Lizzo might be the biggest song because I heard it non-stop on the radio all year,” freshman Breckyn Russell said.

The American Music Awards announced the artist of the decade: Taylor Swift!

These songs are so catchy that even if you haven’t heard them in a while, you could probably remember every verse. The hits also take you back in time to when they were released and you were singing along in the car. Soon this decade will be over, and new hits will take the spotlight, but these memorable songs will always be in our hearts.
