Spooky Season is #Cancelled
With fall in full swing, the chilly weather and changing leaves are a warm welcome; however, the worst holiday of the year tags along too.
Halloween is an overrated holiday with cheap scares and bellyaches. Many people dress up as murderers and chase little kids with fake chainsaws or knives all for a few chuckles. The vast majority of people have been traumatized by a Halloween experience. Halloween is also a dentist’s worst nightmare: trick-or-treaters accumulate enough candy to last until New Year’s; however, most candy is consumed before Thanksgiving rolls around.
All scary Halloween movies fall into two basic categories: murder and paranormal activity. These genres are overused; many franchises try to sell a similar storyline as the original, just with different directors and actors. The movies become repetitive and tiresome. Would the world still exist if nine out of the ten Children of the Corn movies were never produced? The answer is yes.
Unlike holidays such as Easter or Christmas, Halloween is not for everybody. Many people dread the holiday, as they are not sure of how to spend the day. Should you stay home and pass out candy? Binge watch scary movies? Go to a party? Many ages are conflicted with being too old to trick-or-treat but too young to go to a party.
Also unlike other holidays, Halloween is not an all day event. While other holidays are jam-packed with visits to relatives, parades and community, Halloween does not start until the night. If a trick-or-treater came up to your door at noon, you would think the kid was crazy. The holiday is a regular day with a subpar night.
If Halloween wasn’t bad enough, many costumes are provocative or racist. Many people wear tight, black clothing and put on some animal ears and suddenly think they have transformed into a cat. Many costumes are deemed “sexy” by taking an original costume and exposing more skin. Some people will even throw on a sombrero and become “Mexican” for the night. These costumes are offensive and stereotype different ethnicities or cultures.
Many Halloween festivities require more waiting and patience than fun and thrills. Many haunted house lines take over an hour of waiting in the cold before you can actually enter. Pumpkin carving is all fun and games until your design doesn’t come out right after tedious planning and careful cuts. Along with these bores, corn mazes take ages to get out of and often lead to frustration.
Although spooky season may have a few shining moments, the dull and overrated holiday is altogether a day of dread. Make sure to leave the candy on the porch and watch reruns of your favorite Netflix show in order to avoid the pesky holiday.
