Last Tuesday morning, Major League Soccer announced to eager fans that St. Louis will be home to the 28th team in the league, starting play in 2022! St. Louis has been a soccer hotbed for decades, and the city and its residents are buzzing with excitement about the addition.
Scores of professional players have chimed in online to congratulate St. Louis on this huge news, including some of our own St. Dominic alum, Tim Ream and Josh Sargent.
Carolyn Kindle-Betz, head of what is now the first female majority-led MLS ownership group, is ecstatic about securing a MLS team for St. Louis.
“Our MLS team will only add to St. Louis’s renaissance currently underway… It feels amazing. I mean, what an exciting day, not only for the ownership group but for the city of St. Louis. We did it,” Kindle-Betz said.
While suggestions for the team name, colors and crest are underway, the new stadium plans were released months ago. The MLS team will play under the bright lights next to Union Station in the Downtown West neighborhood.
The St. Louis area is already home to many successful soccer players, including World Cup Champions Becky Sauerbrunn and Lori Chalupny. Hopefully even more will continue to rise out of St. Louis, having grown up cheering on players on their city’s own MLS team.
