Everyday Conspiracies
Right under our noses sit several conspiracies that are meddling with the lives we think we live. From hot dog inequalities to buffet mysteries, here are some of the secret realities we encounter in everyday life.
The Hot Dog: Bun Ratio
Have you ever noticed how hot dogs are sold in packs of ten while their buns are sold in packs of eight? Many people think this is a trick to force you to buy more of each; however, the actual answer goes decades back. Starting in 1940, hot dogs were most commonly sold in packs of ten, and that has not changed today. In the case of the buns, they are cooked in two clusters of four in a large pan for efficiency purposes more than anything. There are also exceptions, as some packages have more buns.
Almond Milk: The Refrigerator Liar
In recent years, the dairy aisle has featured some new residents. Some less common milk alternatives are being produced, like cashew milk, pea milk and the most popular: almond milk. However, there is a small fabrication involved in the sale of almond milk. Unlike pasteurized cow’s milk, almond milk does not need to be refrigerated prior to its opening. There are several reasons for this little white lie. When you stick almond milk next to pasteurized milk, you are more likely connect it with the thought of regular milk and buy it as a great alternative. Companies are starting to put some milk alternatives in jugs to further this connotation. Although some milk alternatives do need to be refrigerated, keep an eye out for those refrigerated liars.
The Carbonara Effect
Have you ever been to a buffet and wondered how they make any money with the ample amount of food for such a low price? Look a little closer. At the beginning of the buffet line, you are more likely to find the cheaper or carb-filled foods that will fill you up more quickly. If your plate still isn’t full, the appetizers come next before you actually reach the main course so that you fill up rapidly. Many all-you-can-eat places also use smaller plates so the plate fills up faster at the beginning. Drinks also help the buffet make a profit, as they cost extra and come in big cups so people fill up on soda before they eat too much. Next time you visit a buffet, make sure to skip the carbs and look for the tantalizing courses sitting at the end.
Although these conspiracies may be surprising to some, they are not the only ones that manage to mess with our minds. Every day we encounter little fabrications that we think are normal, so make sure to keep your eyes open for the secrets lying right under your nose.
