Swinging Into Spring Sports

Winter sports are coming to a close and spring sports are starting up with try-outs this week. Every athlete’s fitness, commitment and dedication will be put to the test as the coaches look to fill their rosters.

Soccer

Coach Koeller and the varsity girl’s soccer team are looking to top their 20-5 record from last year with a young pool of talented freshman to add to the mix.

“I anticipate an awesomely strong squad, settled, well-drilled and with cover in all positions,” Koeller said.

Entering her fourth season on varsity, senior Maddy Stewart is stoked to see what this soccer season has in store.

“Definitely most excited for all the laughs and memories I’ll receive. Last year was fun, but now being a senior, having a leadership role on the team and being a role model for the underclassmen, will definitely beat last year. I know that this year is the last year I’ll get to play wearing a St. Dominic uniform so I’m going to make the most of it with my team,” Stewart said.

Lacrosse

Girl’s lacrosse is welcoming a new coach this year, Ms. Shannon Newton, who is expecting around 55 returning players and newcomers this week.

“The upcoming lacrosse season has me very excited. This is my first year coaching lacrosse, so I’m unfamiliar with the returning girls, but I’ve heard nothing but great things about them and their potential. We’ve got a good schedule, so I hope they’re are ready to get out there and compete,” Coach Newton said.

Track and Field

Coach Markway is expecting to see hard work and plenty of competition from his team this season. Although the team lost a couple seniors from last year, there are plenty of promising replacements trying out to fill their shoes.

“I’m pretty excited about what we can accomplish if everyone focuses on being their best each time they go out to compete in practice and meets,” Coach Markway said.

Baseball

Coach Schlenke optimistically awaits the start of the season, with a large group of seniors and a lot of talent trying out for the varsity team this year.

“In my opinion baseball is the ultimate game; it’s simply a man with a rock and a man with a stick. I really think it’s the most beautiful sport ever played,” senior Jack McCormick said.

Tennis

Boys’ tennis sees the return of many experienced players, many of whom have at least three years’ experience under their belts. With so many returning players, the tennis team has a promising season ahead of them.

“The close-knit family aspect of tennis is what makes it such a joy to coach. These guys truly become like brothers and it makes for an enjoyable experience for both the player and the coach,” Coach Duncan said.

Golf

Although there is only one district golfer returning this year, Coach Matusiak is confident that the other boys will give it their all. Returning district golfer, senior Joey Fuchs, is ready to get back to the course.

“This year will definitely be different because it is my senior season, but I don’t want to approach it any differently because if I did that, it could cause some issues. I plan to approach just like last year and the year before,” Fuchs said.

Volleyball

After losing several phenomenal seniors from last year’s roster, the volleyball team has plenty of spots to fill. Senior Thomas Eck hopes to join the ranks, giving it his all.

“It’s going to be tough to fill the shoes of last year’s seniors, but I can’t wait to get out there with the boys and win state,” Eck said.

Despite the openings from last year, several seniors this year are anxious to return to the court.

“I’m just planning to have as much fun as I possibly can this year while also being successful,” senior Kyle Pajda said.

We wish all our athletes trying out this week best of luck for great tryouts and a successful season!
