Academy Awards Altercations
The 91st Academy Awards was this past Sunday, and it was one for the books! With no host, Bohemian Rhapsody taking four awards, and Black Panther, Green Book and Roma coming out with three, this wasn’t one to forget.
It was quite a surprise to the country when Green Book took home three different awards, claiming Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. Their Best Picture win caused some controversy, as many believed Roma should have won. Spike Lee, director of BlacKkKlansman, also believed that he deserved Best Picture.
“I thought I was courtside at the Garden, and the refs made a bad call,” Lee said.
Bohemian Rhapsody took home some well-earned awards, even if everyone wasn’t happy. It was awarded Best Actor, Best Sound Mixing, Best Film Editing and Best Sound Editing. Many took to Twitter saying how they did not agree with the Best Sound Mixing or Best Sound Editing.
“The thing is, Freddie Mercury would have liked The Favourite so much better than Bohemian Rhapsody,” verified Twitter user Lindsay Zoladz said.
The Oscar winners above caused some controversy, but Black Panther did not. It earned Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Original Score, and just about everyone said that was accurate.
Some other honorable mentions included Olivia Colman as Best Actress for The Favourite, BlacKkKlansman as Best Adapted Screenplay, Roma for Best Cinematography and Best Foreign Language Film, and Spider–Man: Into the Spider–Verse took Best Animated Feature Film.
