As the 91st Annual Oscars’ approach, we are anxiously awaiting for the winners to be announced. There have been many heart-warming, sensitive, clever and uproarious movies this year, but that doesn’t begin to compare to the actors and actresses who played the characters. We have seen various types of movie genres and winners every year, but 2018 was one for the books.
The critically acclaimed movie Black Panther was one of the nominees for Best Picture. People have been raving about the representation of African culture that Black Panther displayed. Black Panther was also nominated for Costume Design, as well as Music (Original Song).
A Star is Born has been the go-to-movie for people who love a good romance or tear-jerker. It was nominated for Best Picture for its astonishing portrayal of a woman rising. For that reason, this was a movie that particularly appealed to a female audience. Bradley Cooper was also nominated for Actor in a Leading Role, and Lady Gaga was nominated for Actress in a Leading Role. The song “Shallow” was nominated for Original Song.
Roma was nominated for Best Picture for its depiction of Latin-American struggle. Roma has caught the eye of many audiences for its use of monumentality to express the depths of ordinary life. Roma was also nominated for Foreign Language Film, Cinematography and Production Design. Yalitza Aparicio was nominated for Actress in a Leading Role for her compelling character.
There hasn’t been one disappointment in the movie industry this year. It seems as if almost every audience had their personal favorite that spoke to them. The movies all across the board represents black culture, , women and struggles that go unnoticed and spoke to all kinds of audiences.
