A Teacher That “Counts”
St. Dominic alumnus Mr. Wilmes is happy to be back in the school community as a new teacher. The Honors Geometry, Algebra 2, and College Prep Algebra teacher hopes to make the rest of the year a success.
Math was not always Mr. Wilmes’ favorite subject growing up, but it was a subject that came easily to him. He never quite knew what he wanted to do later in life, but through coaching, he discovered that he very much enjoyed working with high school students. He spoke with previous teachers, and they encouraged him to consider teaching as his career.
“They thought that I would be good at it,” Mr. Wilmes said.
Mr. Wilmes attended Maryville University and went on to receive a master’s degree in secondary education to begin his teaching career. Mr. Wilmes chose to work at St. Dominic because the school is very important to him and his faith life. His favorite part about teaching here is attending our spirited pep assemblies. He loves how strong the school community is and how everyone is able to come together.
“I guess you could say it’s my second home,” Mr. Wilmes said.
When he is not busy teaching, Mr. Wilmes enjoys watching the St. Louis Blues, hunting and fishing. An unexpected and hidden talent of Mr. Wilmes is his amazing cooking abilities. He enjoys preparing any kind of breakfast foods.
As for for the future, Mr. Wilmes does not have any major plans. He will continue to take one day at a time and enjoy being back at St. Dominic.
