Young and Hungry (for School Spirit)
Dominic Crusader cheer is shaking it up this year with their first male cheerleader in over eight years, senior Gavin Young.
After being a part of the homecoming routine as the Crusader, Young discovered a love for being a part of the cheer squad.
“I decided to do it because I always found cheer cool and fun, but I really loved it when I was the Crusader in the homecoming routine. I just loved how much fun it was and how on point you have to be,” said Young.
As Dominic’s only male cheerleader, Young is ready for the new adventure.
“I am excited because in the four years I’ve been at St. Dominic, there has not been a male cheerleader. I am excited to break the standard that cheer is only for girls. I think it will be cool to see a guy be a cheerleader. I will be able to make cheer more open to others,” said Young.
Other cheerleaders are confident that Young will bring a new and exciting aspect to the team, on and off the court.
“I think Gavin is going to add a positive factor to the cheer team. I’m really excited about it,” said senior cheerleader Hayley Merriott.
Gavin is putting in hard work to learn the routines and cheers for the winter season. He is eager to get out on the court and show off his school spirit in a new way.
“I am most looking forward to being a part of a group of people that is the spirit of St. Dominic athletics. Also, I’m excited to help stunt people and learn the routines,” said Young.
Catch Gavin on the court at the next basketball game on December 11 against Duchesne at 7:15pm.
