Back to Back Shootings in Florida

This past Sunday, shots rang out at a Madden football tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, leaving two dead and ten wounded. The suspect, David Katz, killed himself after the tragedy occurred.

Katz was a 24 year old from Baltimore, Maryland who had won the tournament the year prior. This time around he lost, and other gamers took notice of his anger about the loss.

“He was kinda upset about that, so I’m guessing that had something else to do with it,” said Madunic.

The shooter had a history of mental illness dating back to the age of 12, according to his parents’ divorce papers. The records state he was on antipsychotics to treat his mental illnesses. His parents’ opinions of his mental health vastly differed, which contributed to the divorce. His history, however, didn’t prevent him from legally buying guns.

“The suspect had legally purchased two weapons in Baltimore over the past month, and one of the weapons had a laser sight that attached to the gun,” said officials.

Victims Elijah Clayton and Taylor Robertson

Two victims of the shooting, Taylor Robertson, age 27, and Elijah Clayton, age 22, were killed on site. Robertson was a player who had won the competition two years prior and had career winnings of more than $80,000. Clayton, however, was just an attendee who enjoyed the Madden game and community.

We sympathize with the families and community who were affected by this tragedy.
